Newly opened café bar Cakes & Ale will host a fundraiser for Team GB star Millie Rees on Sunday 1st September.

The event will be the culmination of Millie’s 3 Bay Iron Woman Challenge, which will see her put her skills to the test across three disciplines.

Millie will begin her challenge in Murton at 5pm with a 1.5K run. She will then swim from Brandy Cove to Caswell Bay, before paddle boarding to Langland and ski paddling to Mumbles. She’ll finish with a get-together at Cakes & Ale in Mumbles at 8pm, where supporters can enjoy the bar, a raffle and entertainment.

All money raised will provide essential funds to help Millie continue with her intense training and competition programme. Millie is due to represent Great Britain in swimming and surf-lifesaving, a sport that unfortunately has no funding. The responsibility of funding is instead down to the athlete and their family.

“I have been a member of Mumbles Surf-lifesaving Club and competed with the team for nearly 10 years. It has been an important part of my life growing up in Bishopston on the doorstep of our lovely beaches. 2019 will be my first GB Surf-lifesaving Youth Team cap. I currently represent Surf-lifesaving Wales and will be receiving my 3rd Welsh cap this year, and have also been selected as part of the RLSS Welsh team,” said Millie, who has been swimming competitively since the age of 6.

With help from Cakes & Ale and supporters, Millie will be able to work towards her goal of competing at the European Championships in Riccione, Italy, in September. Funds raised will also see her compete as part of Team Wales at the Commonwealth Festival of Lifesaving in Leeds in November. As well as competing in swimming and surf-lifesaving, Millie studies at Gower College.

Millie added, “My academic work is equally important to me. Juggling study, exams and training is challenging, but so far I have managed and will be going into my second year of A Levels this year. With everyone’s help I can study, train and compete. I am hoping to gather as much support as possible to ease the pressure on my mum, who is the biggest support I have!”

“We’re a local business who really cares about its people, so of course we jumped at the chance to host an event that helps raise money for this talented local sportswoman. We hope that you’ll join us and Millie in raising the essential funds she needs to represent Wales and Great Britain in this fantastic sport,” concluded Laurence Winmill, owner of Cakes & Ale.
