M4 Prince of Wales Bridge reopens fully following serious lorry incident

M4 Prince of Wales Bridge has fully reopened following yesterday’s lorry road crash incident.

Despite efforts by Surgeon Charlie Chan at the roadside to resuscitate the driver, he sadly died of his injuries. No-one else was injured.

The Second Severn Crossing was fully closed for 16 hours following a serious incident at 11am yesterday morning in which a lorry left the carriageway and down the embankment after colliding with the central reservation barrier on the westbound approach to the bridge.

The bridge was closed in both directions to allow access for the air ambulance and for police to carry out investigations into the incident.

Six hundred metres of central and nearside barrier were damaged in the incident, and Highways England has been working hard throughout the day and night to release traffic and clear the carriageway of debris.

Lanes 1 and 2 of the eastbound carriageway were opened in time for the evening peak, with the westbound carriageway remaining closed overnight for vehicle recovery and barrier repairs.

Real-time traffic information for England’s motorways and major A roads is available from the web at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or (when not driving) from a phone or mobile device at m.highways.gov.uk. Information is also available on Twitter at @HighwaysSWEST
