140 year-old Conwy landmark to host weddings from this summer

The grade-II listed Bodlondeb civic offices and park in Conwy will host marriages, civil ceremonies and private events from this summer.

The landmark is home to Conwy County Council, who say the decision will have a positive impact on the region’s economy.

Delyth Jones, Head of Law and Governance, believes the 140-year old structure will be popular with couples looking to tie the knot and would complement Llandudno Town Hall, the authority’s other wedding venue.

“Bodlondeb is a stunning building surrounded by acres of beautiful land so when the idea came to us to host weddings here it was well-received,” said Delyth.

“Everyone we’ve spoken to thinks it’s the correct decision and something we should have done sooner.

“The most important thing for us is the knock-on effect it will have for businesses and the community in Conwy and the surrounding area.”

She added: “We will hold weddings and are looking at different packages for receptions and parties after the nuptials have taken place, depending on what couples want.

“If we are just hosting the ceremony then as part of our offering we will identify opportunities for hotels, restaurants, florists, bars and other wedding and function-related services in the area that would benefit all-year round, as well as allowing the use of marquees within the grounds.”

Bodlondeb was was built in 1877 for Albert Wood, a member of the famous manufacturing family producing anchors and cables for Royal Navy ships and other vessels, notably Brunel’s Great Eastern.

Visitors included the composer Sir Edward Elgar and Prime Minister David Lloyd George, though the owner was forced to turn away Queen Victoria as the house was too small to accommodate her entourage. 

Couples marrying at Bodlondeb will be surrounded by incredible, lead-coloured glass, vestibules and wooden beams.

The bride can enter down the wide oak staircase or through panelled doors into the main lobby, where there is a Gothic fireplace, segmental arch and original marble floor, among other features. 

Superintendent Registrar Suzanne Fisher said the venue is perfect for weddings and was a natural next step for the council.

“A lot of newlyweds already come to Bodlondeb for their photos after getting married nearby, which is why we started to think seriously about using it as a venue.

“It’s a stunning building in one of the most beautiful parts of the country so I’m sure many couples will want to have their ceremony here.”
