Manufacturing experts from Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) have gone head to head on the football pitch to raise vital funds for charity.
Staff from the specialist Pencoed site laced up their football boots on May 18 for an epic Cardiff vs Swansea sporting clash.
The event at Cardiff City Stadium saw team players who support Cardiff FC take on those who support Swansea FC in a bid to raise vital funds for the children’s ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.
Over the past five years Sony UK TEC has raised over £60,000 for the hospital, with funds helping to enhance the hospital experience for children facing serious health issues.
The charity fixtures kicked off with a children’s match organised by the Cardiff City Foundation, followed by the main game, where Sony UK TEC’s teams went head to head.
On the day, the Cardiff team claimed the victory with threegoals, with Swansea scoring two, and over £2,000 was raised for their chosen charity.
Director of professional services, Gerald Kelly, said:
“We are delighted to have hosted this fantastic event to raise even more funds for our chosen charity, The Princess of Wales Hospital.
“Our staff showed off their football skills during this hugely enjoyable event for all those involved. We have a good mix of Cardiff and Swansea supporters within our team so it was great to see this sporting rivalry on the pitch. Everyone had a fantastic time!”
This is the third time that Sony UK TEC has taken to the football pitch to support the Bridgend-based hospital. Last year teams from the manufacturing facility raised funds by taking part in games at both Pen y Bont Football Club and Cardiff City Football Club.
And the teams will once again be lacing up their boots for a football fixture at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium on June 1 against one of the facility’s clients – RS Components, where Sony UK TEC will raise funds for the Bridgend hospital, and their opponents will support Children in Need.
In the last year the team at Pencoed has also taken part in a charity golf day at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Course; a 300 mile bike ride from north to south Wales; cake sales, and individual fundraising campaigns to help support the vital work of the hospital.
So far, thanks to the generosity of the team of over 600 skilled team members, over £60,000 has been raised for the Princess of Wales Hospital.
The fundraising events form part of the Pencoed’s facility’s ongoing commitment to supporting and enhancing local communities across Wales.
