Too many older people living in our local communities will face the festive period all alone without seeing another human being and only the television for company. No one should have to experience loneliness like this at any time of the year, and one local organisation decided they wanted to do something about it!
Panasonic Manufacturing has been based on the outskirts of Cardiff in Pentwyn since 1976. Every year the 400 plus workforce based there enjoy a three course festive lunch in the canteen and this year they wanted to ensure it was not just them sitting down for lunch on Wednesday the 11th December.
Pelham Morgan from Panasonic explains: “As an organisation based in Cardiff, we all feel strongly about giving back to the local community. So, when Age Connects Cardiff & the Vale approached us about working together, we immediately thought we could help to spread some festive cheer amongst older Cardiff residents. It was a pleasure having so many interesting and fun individuals at the factory. We enjoyed bingo, lunch and a few mince pies but most of all it was nice to chat and spend time hearing the stories each person had to tell”.
Sidney Daw aged 94 attended the lunch with a couple of his friends. Sid told us “I’ve had a fantastic time. Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly. The turkey dinner was a real treat and I won twice at bingo, so it’s been a great day all round. I enjoy meeting new people and it has been a lovely opportunity to make new friends”.
Karen Steele from Age Connects also attended the lunch as she reiterates Pelham and Sid’s sentiments “It’s been a wonderful day and everyone of all ages involved has had a big grin on their face! It’s heartwarming to see that a large organisation like Panasonic hasn’t forgotten its place in the community and throughout the day members of staff of all levels have popped by on their breaks to chat with the older people having lunch. They have served our guests and given gifts but most importantly they have given their time to make some people who may not get out much smile and feel part of the community. On behalf of Age Connects and all of the older people who attended, we say thank you!”
For over 45 years, local charity Age Connects Cardiff & the Vale has been helping and supporting local older people and their families through some of the most difficult times in their lives. They are committed to tackling loneliness, isolation and poverty amongst older people and strive to create a society in which older people are respected, valued and heard.
