A group of Macmillan professionals from Wales attended The Prince of Wales’ 70th Birthday Patronage Celebration held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, along with well-known Macmillan supporters.

Michelle Lloyd and Theresa Richards, who both manage end of life care, breast cancer nurse Tessa Phillips, and lead cancer nurse Annette Beasley represented Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales at the event dedicated to the achievements of The Prince of Wales’ Patronages, Military affiliations and other charities supported by His Royal Highness.

They were joined by Welsh celebrities, David Emanuel, Iwan Thomas, and Sian Williams, along with Alison Steadman, who is best known for her role as Pam in Gavin and Stacey.

The guests were joined by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who were at their first royal engagement following their wedding last month, alongside hosts, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

Each professional was nominated to attend by a member of Macmillan staff in their region, for the outstanding contribution they have provided to support people affected by cancer.

Following a speech made by the Duke of Sussex about the work of The Prince of Wales over the last 50 years, guests were invited to speak with the royal hosts, and listen to musical entertainment by the Band of the Welsh Guards and Borough Welsh Choir. Tessa Phillips, who works as a Macmillan Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist providing supportive care for individuals with breast cancer, said:

“The Prince of Wales’ 70th Birthday Patronage garden party was amazing, such a wonderful experience.  I was really excited when I received the invitation and felt honoured that my managers at Macmillan Cancer Support had nominated me”.

Michelle Lloyd, Macmillan End of Life Care Modernisation Manager at Cwm Taf University Health Board, said:

“Being involved in improving care for cancer and palliative care patients has been a great honour, it has meant a lot to me personally and it was a great privilege to represent Macmillan Cancer Support at the celebration.

“It was a beautiful day and it was wonderful to meet other Macmillan professionals and fundraisers.”

Theresa Richards, Lead Macmillan End of Life Nurse Facilitator with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, added:

“It was the most wonderful day. I felt so privileged to have been nominated by Macmillan Cancer Support. A day to always remember especially in my 40th year working in the NHS.”

David Emanuel, Fashion Designer & Royal Courturier, also said: “It’s an honour to be an Ambassador for Macmillan, having experienced first-hand the wonderful care and support that they offer.  Being invited to represent the charity at the Buckingham Palace garden party was an absolute delight, and the height of elegance.”

Richard Pugh, Head of Services for Macmillan in Wales, said:

“I am delighted that these four incredible Macmillan professionals were able to attend The Prince of Wales’ 70th Birthday Patronage Celebration.

“Without the dedication and commitment of these professionals, Macmillan would not be able to provide vital services to people affected by cancer.

“Nominating Michelle, Tessa, Annette and Theresa to attend the garden party was a chance for us to say thank for you for their continued contribution to Macmillan.”
