Charities RSPB Cymru and Buglife Cymru have been presented with a cheque for £38,195.89 by former Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Bob Derbyshire.

The money has been raised as a result of the former Lord Mayor’s fundraising activities during his year in office which included taking on the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge, completing a two mile swim in his local pool and joining school children on a sponsored walk around Bute Park.

Former Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Bob Derbyshire said:

“Nature on our fragile planet faces many challenges – hopefully the money raised during my time in office will help these two important charities to continue the excellent work they do to protect nature, right here in Cardiff.  I’d like to thank everybody who generously donated their time and money to help me reach such a fantastic total.”

Robert Williams, Community Fundraiser at RSPB Cymru said:

“We’d like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Cllr Derbyshire and everybody who kindly supported RSPB Cymru and Buglife Cymru through his Lord Mayor’s Charity work. This generous donation will help support our work Giving Nature a Home, including our project in Cardiff to inspire the city’s children to get out into Cardiff’s wonderful parks and greenspaces and to excite and enthuse them by the nature that surrounds them”.

    Clare Dinham, Buglife Cymru, said:

“Being one of the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities over the past year has provided a great opportunity to raise the profile of invertebrates and our charity in Cardiff and across Wales. Funds raised will directly support our conservation work in Wales and we are grateful to everyone who has donated funds, and a special thank you to Cllr Bob Derbyshire for his support.”
