Swansea University’s Oriel Science will be returning to the National Waterfront Museum on Sunday, 8 March to host “Super Science Swansea” as part of British Science Week.
From 11am-4pm, visitors of all ages can enjoy over 25 interactive science exhibits in this free event. Last year’s event saw almost 3,600 visitors attend the National Waterfront Museum.
This year visitors can take part in “Poo Sports” to discover how dung beetles and other decomposers provide such an important recycling service to humans, learn the secrets of mummification used in Ancient Egypt and interact with liquids that can behave like solids and solids that can behave like liquids.
As well as this, visitors can see how researchers in the Materials Research Centre (MRC) at Swansea University are trying to develop cleaner and greener building and construction materials.
Younger guests can pay a visit to the Teddy Bear Hospital and the Swansea University Race Car Simulator will be available for all to test their skills on the virtual track. The whole family can also race around the museum’s galleries to find the 8 Olympic flags in The Olympic Games Trail to mark the forthcoming summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The exhibits on show will include:
- The Language of Spells: Craft your own spell
- Fun With Blood By The Blood Suckaz
- Listen to the story of Mary Anning, the greatest British fossil collector, by an in-costume Mary Anning
- Roll up! Roll up! The Chemistry Carnival is in town!
- Maze Solving: Crabs vs Robots
- Swansea University Race Engineering car simulator
- Teddy Bear Hospital
Talks and workshops will also feature throughout the day. Come and meet extraordinary women whose lives and careers have been shaped by science at interactive workshops and panel discussions in collaboration with Women’s Equality Network (WEN) Wales and view the inspiring 100 Welsh Women exhibition to see the fantastic women who have shaped our history.
You can also join acoustics expert, Dr Mark Lewney in his mind-bending lecture explaining the physics of rock using riffs from Vivaldi to AC/DC, the secret of the Stradivarius and how string vibrations might lie at the heart of the big questions about the universe.
Later, take a trip to space that will teach you everything you need to know to be an astronaut with Science Theatre’s Neil Monteiro, followed by wildlife biologist Lizzie Dalywho will take you on a journey across the Welsh coast to discuss conservation stories, wild encounters and wildlife stories from across Wales.

“Science touches so many aspects of modern life and there are clear indications of an impending skills shortage in this area. Super Science Swansea is designed to help encourage the next generation choose science subjects in school to help plug this shortage area and pursue rewarding careers.
“Science is for everyone and is blind to gender and background. So it is particularly important for us to help celebrate International Women’s Day with the Women’s Equality Network. There will be a number of public talks by leaders in their fields who are wonderful role models to our young, female budding scientists.”
