Swansea University staff and students celebrated International Women’s Day with a group cycle ride from the University campuses to the Civic Centre.

Riders from across the city joined the group that was led by a team of British Cycling accredited Ride Leaders.

The University offered free use of the Santander Cycles for the ride which aimed to encourage more women into cycling.

The cyclists travelled from the Singleton Park and Bay Campuses University campuses to the Civic Centre where they met Councillor Louise Gibbard.

Jayne Cornelius, Swansea University’s Sustainable Travel Officer said:

“I was so pleased to see so many women from across the University and representatives from other organisations including Swansea Council, the Breeze Cycling Group and Bikeability to help us celebrate International Women’s Day.

“Swansea University was Wales’ first Gold Standard Cycle Friendly Employer. We run a number of initiatives to encourage our students and staff to travel by bike including regular Led Rides by our British Cycling accredited Ride Leaders. Group cycling is a fabulous way of bringing communities together and we’re looking forward to seeing more and more women getting involved in cycling.”

    Councillor Louise Gibbard said:

“I was delighted to join members of the Swansea University community for their “Lets Ride” event as we celebrated International Women’s Day.

“Bringing people together in this way to make the most of our fantastic coastline and cycling facilities is a great idea to raise awareness of this year’s theme “Each for Equal”. It reminds us that whilst significant progress is being made around gender equality there is still a way to go in lots of fields including sport, higher education and politics.”
