A Rhondda-based business is set to be one of the first training providers in the UK to produce newly qualified learners from a ‘trailblazing’ new, health, safety and environment apprenticeship programme.
Cognitia is one of only a small number of training providers of the SHE-Tech programme approved by the UK Government and listed on its Register Of Apprenticeship Training Providers (ROATP).
Launched in 2018, the Safety, Health and Environmental Technician (SHE-Tec) is the UK’s first apprenticeship programme of its kind and was developed by a ‘Trailblazer’ group of employers including Costain, HS2, Persimmon Homes and Thames Water.
The group sought to create a new and modern apprenticeship programme that was fit-for-purpose with today’s workplace challenges and requirements. It also aimed to focus on the climate challenges of the future, and what can be done to be mindful of an industry’s effect on the environment.
The programme covers a wide range of topics from general workplace health, safety and environment issues to hazard classification, developing change innovation and behavioural safety systems.
The programme is seen as the starting point for a career of learning and excellence in Health, Safety and the Environment, and Cognitia is currently supporting apprentices from a range of industries including media, construction, food production and aviation.

The qualification is a first for the UK and so to be producing a new, modern wave of apprentices is a testament to how quickly Cognitia has grown over the last four years.
“We’re currently operating across four continents, running more than 50 workshops and supporting over 400 learners, all from our base in the Rhondda. On programmes such as the SHE-Tech Apprenticeship Programme, we are helping build careers for the staff of market leaders like Virgin Media, Muller Foods and Morgan Sindall.
