Three researchers at Cardiff Metropolitan University have been selected for the Welsh Crucible 2018, an award-winning personal, professional and leadership programme for academics with a minimum of three years of postdoctoral research experience.

Dr David Aldous from Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences, Dr Carmen Casaliggi from Cardiff School of Education and Social Policy and Dr Jo Welton from Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences have been successfully elected to the programme following a rigorous application process.

Founded eight years ago following the success of similar programmes across the UK, the Welsh Crucible supports research-inspired innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration in Wales and is funded by a consortium of Welsh universities, in partnership with the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.

The programme seeks to guide members with the meaningful transfer of their knowledge to the public sphere, facilitate creative thought processes that can make a difference to their work, advise on tackling research-related issues and encourage the development of the skills and attitudes necessary for innovative research.

Demand for places on the Welsh Crucible among researchers who have demonstrated excellence within their field is considerable and being awarded a place is a prestigious accolade.

The trio will now undertake three ‘skills labs’ in Cardiff, Swansea and Bangor as part of a system designed to encourage collaboration and networking between the researchers elected to the programme.

On their success Professor Sheldon Hanton, Pro Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation, said:

“Cardiff Met has a longstanding reputation as an institute that encourages and supports postdoctoral research excellence. David, Carmen and Jo’s selection for the Welsh Crucible 2018 further exemplifies this.

“We are all delighted that these three talented individuals have been bestowed this honour and eagerly await the positive outcomes that being members of the programme will undoubtedly deliver as they continue their highly-promising careers.”
