Ramblers Cymru need your help to map best family walks in the Valleys

Ramblers Cymru are looking for families to share their favourite walks in the South Wales Valleys as part of a pilot project to promote family friendly walking routes.

The first stage of the project is looking for families to take part by sharing their favourite walks, with the possibility that the family could have a published promoted route named after them.

We would love to hear about your favourite family walks telling us how and why they are special to you. Is it the view? Is it a memory? or is it the ice cream that you can buy on route that keeps bringing you back? The walks can be long or short, linear or circular, they can be just a walk, or they can have stop offs on the way.

The one requirement is that they should be near to or have a link with one of the following sites within the Valleys Regional park, known as the Discovery Gateways:

    • Parc Slip Nature Reserve, Aberkenfig, Bridgend.
    • Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar
    • Bryngarw Country Park, Bridgend
    • Dare Valley Country Parc, Aberdare
    • Caerphilly Castle, Caerphilly
    • Cwmcarn Forest, Caerphilly
    • Blaenafon World Heritage Centre, Blaenafon
    • Cyfarthfa Park, Merthyr Tydfil
    • Ynysangharad War Memorial Parc, Pontypridd

Family Walking Trails Project Officer, Kate Blair said: “The project has started at a difficult time but having seen so many families accessing walks locally during the lockdown we are sure that some stunning walks have been found, we’d love to hear from you.

“As well as helping publicise the walks locally the project will also look to develop the walks as part of a tourism package that brings visitors to the Valleys, something that will be much needed for local businesses once the restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so.”

For more information about the project and to get involved visit www.ramblers.org.uk/familytrails or email Kate at [email protected]

The Family Walking Trails are being developed within the Valleys Regional Park promoting the beauty of the landscape while strengthening the area’s economy and has with thanks received funding from the Welsh Government’s Foundational Economy Challenge Fund and The People’s Post Code Lottery.
