The significant 21st Century Schools investment in Treorchy is now delivered, after a refurbished teaching block and new music department were recently completed – adding to a series of further improvements in recent years.

Staff and pupils at Treorchy Comprehensive School will benefit from the new block, which was handed over to the Council by contractors on June 4. The work has seen a complete refurbishment of an existing building – to include a new music department, general classrooms, fitness suite and toilets.

The final weeks of work to deliver these improvements were completed with the Council’s contractor, Kier, adhering to the relevant social distancing guidance, in response to the Coronavirus national health emergency.

The work represents the second part of the wider 21st Century Schools investment for the school, jointly funded by #RCTinvest and Welsh Government through its 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme. In time for the 2018/19 academic year, the school received a brand new three-storey science block – following a new Multi Use Games Area, sixth form area, seminar rooms, coffee shop and dining facilities.

The improvements in Treorchy were part of an £85m investment in education across Rhondda and Tonyrefail in 2018/19, which saw new 21st Century schools delivered in Porth, Tonyrefail and Tonypandy, along with further school improvements in Cymmer, Ferndale and Llwyncelyn.

Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Inclusion Services, said:

“I’m delighted that these further improvements have now been completed at Treorchy Comprehensive School, for the benefit of staff and pupils. The school’s new science block, sixth form areas and other improvements were gratefully-received two years ago, as part of the Council’s joint 21stCentury Schools investment with Welsh Government.

“The latest work has seen an existing teaching block almost completely rebuilt to deliver a stimulating learning environment that the school can be very proud of – including a brand new music department. These state-of-the-art facilities are now ready for staff and pupils to enjoy when they return to school.”
