A series of new traffic schemes will be put in place across Cardiff, to ensure children and families can maintain social distancing safely and be supported to use active travel, when schools reopen from Monday 29, June.
Road closures will take place at 27 schools sites, to facilitate social distancing at school drop-offs and picks up, meaning that children and families can utilise roads where needed.
Other measures will include the widening of pavements and pathways and the introduction of temporary 20mph limits on roads at some school sites.
Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: “Following the announcement from Welsh Government that schools were to reopen at the end of June, we have been carrying out careful planning around a series of measures to ensure children, staff and parents can return safely.
“A great deal of work has been undertaken with schools so that they can operate in physically distanced environments. These new traffic measures will allow children and families to arrive and depart from school safely, in addition to the physical distancing measures that will be in place during the school day.
“We are taking this opportunity to continue to promote Active School Travel as the safest and healthiest way to get to school and I encourage pupils to walk, bike and scoot to school wherever possible.”
Cllr Caro Wild, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport said: “Our teams have been working around the clock with schools, giving consideration to each specific location and setting, to help implement measures which will assist in promoting social distancing.
“Delivering the Council’s Active Travel to Schools programme remains a priority as schools begin to reopen. Children and parents are being asked to use active travel as a means to travel to school. This is not only the safest way, but will also play a key role in reducing congestion, improving air quality and combating the ongoing problems of climate change.”

As part of Cardiff Council’s commitment to promoting and assisting active school travel, parents and children are being asked about the regular routes they take on foot or by scooter and bike to help plan the Active Travel Network Map.
