Many people feel as if they have been climbing the walls during Lockdown.
But now youngsters in Port Talbot will be doing exactly that – but for fun – thanks to the generosity of Tata Steel.
Tata’s subsidiary, UKSE, has donated £2500 to help a local play centre buy a new climbing wall to keep the youngsters entertained.
The wall will shortly be delivered to the Playhem centre, and will, says Manager Karen Todd, be an exciting new feature when they reopen and welcome the kids back.
“We wanted something super-duper for the kids to use when we reopen after the Lockdown, and this fits the bill perfectly,” she said.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of UKSE who have come forward with this funding to help us at this difficult time.”
Glyn Thomas, UKSE Manager in Wales, said :”The centre is very important as a hub for local people, and we are delighted to be able to give them some timely impetus as they get ready to reopen.
“Through our Community Support Programme in Port Talbot, and working with the local authority and other organisations, we are working to support the fabric of the community in the area.”
The Playhem centre based on Seaway Parade is part of Thrive Group Wales, a social enterprise. Thrive also has a cleaning business which takes on private and commercial work. Profits from both these businesses are used to support the valuable work of Thrive Women’s Aid.
Both businesses are highly successful and between them have created some 17 jobs. Playhem was bought as a commercial concern last year. “Before Covid we were going from strength to strength,” said Karen.
As well as a play centre for young ones, it provides a focus for the community, working with local youth groups, SEN groups, schools, social services and women’s groups.
Neath and Port Talbot County Borough Council have played an important role in helping Thrive develop. “The council has been absolutely fantastic. They helped us set up the centre, and have been generally supportive in all aspects. We could not have done it without them.”
