Repair work will shortly get underway to rectify the damage to the 3G sports pitch in Aberdare following damage caused by Storm Dennis – for the benefit of local sports teams, schools and the wider community.

The facility, which is located at the Sobell leisure complex in Aberdare, was closed following severe storm damage sustained during the unprecedented weather event earlier this year. The Council has now appointed South Wales Sports Grounds as the contractor responsible for carrying out the repairs.

Work will begin on site in the week commencing Monday, August 3, lasting approximately five weeks – and it will bring the facility back into use.

The repair scheme will include a complete replacement of the carpet surface and its underlay, which were both damaged beyond repair during the flooding. All work will adhere to the latest guidance in relation to social distancing.

Councillor Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said:

“I’m pleased that the 3G sports pitch in Aberdare will be brought back into use very soon, as it is a well-used facility by many members of the community. It’s good news that we are able to make the necessary repairs with the winter sports season and the new academic year both fast approaching.

“The facility is one of our 13 outdoor 3G sports pitches in communities across the County Borough, which are invaluable to our outdoor leisure offer through the winter months in particular. We also have three excellent outdoor athletics facilities – in Beddau, a new recently-opened track in Clydach Vale, and the £3m Ron Jones Stadium, a stone’s throw away from the Aberdare 3G pitch.”
