Swansea art gallery invites public to send in their postcards

The pandemic has probably meant fewer postcards being sent – but Swansea is about to buck that trend.

As holidays have been cancelled, postponed and rearranged, the team at the city’s Glynn Vivian Art Gallery got their thinking hats on.

And now they’re asking people to send them “postcards to the future.”

They will feature drawings, poems, writing, paintings, collages or photos.

They should all be focused on the future. For example – What are your dreams? What changes do you imagine taking place? What challenges do we face? What world might we create together?

Many of those submitted will be exhibited at the gallery when it reopens. They’ll then be stored as part of the gallery’s Collection to act as a reminder of this moment in time for future generations.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “This is a good way to stay creative and thoughtful through this challenging time – it’s a way of staying in touch with the gallery and being interested in the future.

“The Glynn Vivian team and partners have been working throughout the pandemic to ensure that our city’s Collection and skills have remained accessible online to the public.

“The Postcards to the Future initiative is a good example of that – and it’s open to all. The gallery, whilst temporarily closed to help our community fight coronavirus, is still here for Swansea.”

Your Postcard to the Future can be one you have at home or one you make yourself – and  should be postcard sized, A6 (148mm x 106mm). They can be horizontal or vertical and are limited to one entry per person.

Please send your Postcard to the Future to Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Alexandra Road, Swansea SA1 5DZ, by September 6, indicating which side of the postcard you’d like to be displayed by including your name or initials and location on that side. Alternatively, the work can be submitted anonymously.

Staff have been looking after the city centre gallery during the pandemic. They are preparing to reopen this autumn with additional safety and social distancing measures put in place and increased cleaning regimes in line with Government guidelines.

Keep an eye on their social media for updates.
