Welsh wool used for sustainable protective packaging

Rhug Estate is ingeniously using the organic wool from its flock of sheep on the farm to make high quality, sustainable, protective packaging for its new Wild Beauty skin and body care collections. Wool from the farm is also used to produce luxury duvets and mattress toppers.

This week is a time to celebrate the versatility of sheep’s wool as it is #WoolWeek. This year is the tenth anniversary of HRH The Prince of Wales’ Campaign for Wool. Rhug Estate was granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales two years ago.

Lord Newborough, owner of Rhug, came up with the idea to use the sheep’s wool as a beautiful organic sustainable packaging in Wild Beauty skincare products when they are shipped out. He said, “Everything we do here at Rhug Estate is about being healthy and sustainable. Our new skincare collection is created using many highly beneficial ingredients found around Rhug Estate and the majority of the products are produced in 100% recyclable glass jars or bottles.  As Wild Beauty is probably the most sustainable and well certified organic and natural skin care collection to be launched onto the market in 2020 we thought it important to carry the organic and sustainable story all the way through and use our own organic wool in the packaging. Being an organic farm it made perfect sense to use wool from our flock of North Country Mule sheep to provide the ultimate protection for these valuable items.

“We have to sheer the sheep annually in the Spring otherwise it can cause the animals ill health during the summer heat. It’s heart-breaking to hear that the value placed by society on sheep’s wool is ridiculously low for such a high quality product. With a flock of 3,500 breeding ewes at Rhug we have a lot of wool.”

As well as the small quantity of sheep’s wool being used for packaging, Rhug Estate also produces the Wool to produce luxury quality duvets. The natural antibacterial properties of wool, along with its inherent ability to regulate both temperature and moisture, create the best possible conditions for a healthy natural night’s sleep. No chemicals, no fire retardants, no man-made fibres. Just organic and sustainable.
