Swansea University academics are among the world-leading experts sharing their knowledge to help Welsh sixthformers with their studies during lockdown.
Staff from across the University have been compiling online content – ranging from webinars to Zoom meetings, tailored web content to talks – to help A-level students as they learn at home and prepare to enter higher education.
The resources are part of the Stay Safe. Stay Learning initiative announced by Welsh Education Minister Kirsty Williams which aims to provide guidance and the tools to support learners, leaders, governors, practitioners, parents and carers in dealing with the impact of coronavirus.
The Welsh Government has worked with universities across Wales to collect appropriate and engaging resources for students in Year 13. These also include information about university life.
Links take students to University pages and resources where they can discover more about subjects they may be planning to study in September or discover new and interesting topics.
The Welsh Government’s dedicated Hwb webpage also contains a link to Swansea University’s virtual tour and upcoming virtual open days.
Varied and imaginative content from Swansea University’s Medical School, Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law, School of Management and colleges of Engineering, Science, Human & Health Sciences and Arts and Humanities will give young learners a digital experience of what is on offer.
Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education Martin Stringer praised University colleagues had for the way they had rallied to the Welsh Government’s call for resources.
He said: “Our staff are already providing exceptional support to our own students during these very difficult and uncertain times and I am very proud of the way they have now stepped up and offered resources and help to Year 13 students across Wales.”
In a special message to learners Kirsty Williams acknowledged they might feel nervous about making the transition to university, especially without the final term in school or college to prepare but urged them to make the most of the resources on offer.
“There are lots of options geared directly to you. Please take advantage of them and use this time well to give yourself a great head start for uni. “
Swansea University is holding its next virtual open day for undergraduates on Saturday, June 20.
