Cabinet Members have received an update on RCT Council’s progress in acquiring land at Trecynon and Gwaelod-y-Garth, which are intended to be used to support the South Wales Metro in the future.
In two separate exempt reports to the Cabinet meeting on Thursday, April 29, Members discussed the two acquisitions – relating to land previously used for the former Mayhew Chicken Factory site in Trecynon, as well as land and buildings at Willowford Road in Gwaelod-y-Garth.
Former Mayhew Chicken Factory site, Trecynon
The site is located adjacent to the Aberdare Bypass, and could facilitate the potential development of a station halt on the opposite side of the river. It could provide park and ride arrangements and a pedestrian access to the station. It is a strategic site, with the extension of passenger rail services from Aberdare-Hirwaun being explored through Welsh Government-funded studies.
Willowford Road, Gwaelod-y-Garth
The site comprises land and buildings along Willowford Road, and offers the potential to provide a relocated railway halt to replace the existing Treforest Halt located 0.4 miles to the north. The public transport offer linking to Treforest Industrial Estate would be enhanced.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: “Cabinet agreed with recommendations of the two separate reports to their meeting on Thursday, in relation to the acquisition of land at Trecynon and Gwaelod-y-Garth. During the discussion, Members expressed their support of the Council’s purchase of the Freehold interest of both strategic sites.
“These acquisitions will safeguard the land for future use in support of the South Wales Metro – in particular, the potential extension of the Aberdare railway line to Hirwaun, and improved provision to serve Treforest Industrial Estate. This will achieve social, economic and environmental benefits for both of the areas in question.”
