Aldi reveals more details on its Porthcawl food store proposals

Aldi has revealed more details around its proposals for a new food store development in Porthcawl.

The supermarket chain is preparing a planning application for a two acre site on the north side of Salt Lake in Porthcawl.

Ahead of the submission of the application, people are being invited to have their say by completing a questionnaire. A formal Pre-Application Consultation submission has also been made to Bridgend County Borough Council which seeks comments of statutory bodies such as the highways authority.

In a leaflet delivered to residents in Porthcawl, Aldi says the new store will help to keep spending local and reduce the need to travel further afield. It will also create at least 40 new jobs for local people.

The store roof design features a ‘wave’ motif and by using wood and limestone materials, the aim is for the development to provide a landmark ‘gateway’ to the town.

A package of measures to improve walking and cycling links around the site are also planned with pedestrian and cycle connections to the town centre to encourage ‘linked’ trips.

This multi-million pound investment in Porthcawl will feature a unique, eye-catching design and involve a bright, spacious store with wide aisles.

Up to 40 new jobs will be created at the store, providing local people with excellent career opportunities and no zero hours contracts.

Unlike other supermarkets, Aldi is not a ‘one stop shop’. Its smaller stores focus on a limited range of great value, high quality goods, complementing rather than competing with existing local shops and services.

The site which will be extensively landscaped and include elements of public art will include 114 car parking spaces, including five designated blue badge spaces, seven parent and child parking spaces, and two Click and Collect spaces. There will also be four ‘live’ electric vehicle charging points, with provision for 20 more.

The development is the first stage in the regeneration of the wider Salt Lake development site with the food store acting as a catalyst for future developments.
