HRH The Countess of Wessex has been helping celebrate Swansea as a Queen’s Green Canopy “Champion City” during a Royal Visit to the city on Wednesday 9th March. To mark the occasion, Her Royal Highness planted a Jubilee tree at the city’s new coastal park, which is next door to the newly opened Swansea Arena. The Countess toured the park, which is the first new urban park in Swansea for a century. Pembrokeshire County Council is pleased to announce the start of improvement works at Bridgend Square, Haverfordwest as part of the wider construction of the Haverfordwest Transport Interchange Project. Evan Pritchard Contractors Limited will progress a package of engineering enabling works in the existing Bridgend Square Car Park. A ceremony was held at Bassaleg School to mark the start of work to replace aging buildings with state-of-the-art teaching facilities. It will be the latest scheme to be delivered with match funding from the Welsh Government through its Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. Over the next three years, a modern teaching block, dining and assembly areas will be created to replace the older structures. Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet has this week (9 March) unanimously approved plans to develop and construct a new visitor centre at Parc Penallta, Ystrad Mynach. The new multi-purpose visitor centre will be delivered in partnership with Welsh Government and will act as a community hub and discovery gateway for the Valleys Regional Park initiative and provide a potential home for their ‘guardian scheme’. It will incorporate education and conferencing facilities, a café, toilets, showers, and act as health and wellbeing hub. With help from Cantref Primary School’s eco club, Abergavenny’s Bailey Park now has five brand new English Oak trees and five Copper Beech trees, which have been dedicated to Her Majesty the Queen for the Platinum Jubilee under the Queen’s Green Canopy project. After inspections of Bailey Park’s green infrastructure, a number of the trees in the park had to be removed for safety reasons. To compensate for the loss, 21 trees have been planted this year. The Welsh Government is calling on people across the country to join a national consultation that will shape its strategy to make Wales smoke-free by 2030. Tackling health inequalities and increasing support to help people quit are key to the Welsh Government’s ambitions to see Wales become smoke-free within the decade. Around 14% of people in Wales currently smoke and there are strong links between smoking and deprivation, with those in more deprived areas more likely to smoke. Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid has revealed the impact of rising costs on businesses in Wales following the British Chamber of Commerce’s (BCC) latest UK growth forecast. The BCC has downgraded its expectations for UK economic growth in 2022 to 3.6%, less than half the growth of 7.5% recorded last year. The store now offers 37 extra hours of Post Office services a week for the convenience of customers.
