School pupils have helped give a boost to a local Wildflower site to help it bloom with health for next season. Following Denbighshire County Council’s declaration of a climate and ecological emergency in 2019, this project is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing biodiversity across the county, with nearly 60 sites, including highway verges, footpath edges, cycleways and amenity grasslands, now being managed to create wildflower meadows. Bridgend County Borough Council is looking into the next steps to address a fire-damaged building in Bridgend town centre. The vacant three-storey commercial property on Nolton Street was damaged in a fire in April 2020. Known locally as ‘The Ranch’, the building, which is privately-owned and not maintained by the council, was inspected after the blaze by local authority structural engineers and made safe by removing loose roofing tiles, damaged guttering and other debris that could have potentially fallen to the street below. Tintern’s Grade II Listed Wireworks bridge, which crosses from Monmouthshire into Gloucestershire, was closed to vehicles in August 2021 following the results of a structural assessment undertaken earlier in the year. Pedestrians and cyclist have still been able to use the bridge. RCT Council has provided a progress update on its upcoming work to replace the Brook Street footbridge at Ystrad Rhondda Railway Station – with initial work on site scheduled to begin during the first week of January 2022. All works to demolish the former Dan y Mynydd Care Home buildings in Porth are now complete, to enable the potential future redevelopment of the site into a 60-bed Extra Care facility by Linc Cymru (Linc) and the Council.
