Three members of Swansea’s skateboarding community have given their backing to an ongoing investment in wheel sports facilities across the city. Exist Skatepark co-founder Kate Leonard, coach Jon Lawton and Bishopston-based skateboarder Will Muxworthy say improved facilities will cater for demand while also helping boost the sport’s popularity. Working in partnership with an expert company called Curve Studio, Swansea Council is investing £2.8m in wheel sports facilities in many communities. Ceredigion County Council and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) have shared their proposal to maintain educational provision on UWTSD’s Lampeter campus. A 91 year old athlete who has run the London Marathon twice took on a new challenge to celebrate two major milestones at the care home where he now lives. John Carson, a former member of the Eryri Harriers running club, volunteered to do a couple of laps around Pendine Park’s Bryn Seiont Newydd care home in Caernarfon. He was among a team of residents and staff who walked around the beautifully landscaped grounds 40 times to mark Pendine’s 40th anniversary and Bryn Seiont Newydd’s 10th  birthday. A penguin rehabilitation project in Brazil is tracking penguins’ journeys home with the help of an Aberystwyth University academic. Each year from May onwards, penguins swim from Patagonia in southern Argentina to the south coast of Brazil seeking food and warmer waters. Some of the animals get lost in search of food and become stranded on the beach.  They then get hungry and cold, as they are unable to feed out of the water and unable to waterproof their feathers. A former British Army Officer who fought and was injured in Afghanistan is now set to pursue a new career as a teacher and has graduated from Cardiff Metropolitan University. Laurence Hooper, 42, from Penarth, spent seven years with the army, travelling the world working his way up to Captain before deploying on operations as an engineer. After being shot and almost having his leg amputated while serving in Afghanistan in 2008, Laurence rehabilitated and went on to run a decompression facility in Cyprus for soldiers returning from combat.
