George Orwell’s political fable Animal Farm has been voted the nation’s favourite ever school book, in new research commissioned for International Children’s Book Day 2021 (2nd April). The study1, conducted by Oxford Home Schooling, asked 2,000 UK adults which books they most enjoyed reading when at school and Animal Farm was selected by a quarter (25%) of respondents. The novella was followed in the rankings by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (21%) and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men (19%). Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is the most popular school book written by a female author (18%), placing sixth on the overall list. Harlech Foodservice – based in Criccieth in Gwynedd and Chester – announced they are putting up wages by an average of 5.37% for their 150-strong workforce with some employees receiving considerably more. A former Welsh Water teacher has had her commitment to the development of education and sport in Rwanda recognised and been awarded a British Empire Medal. Mary Watkins, who spent 13 years working as a peripatetic teacher at the not for profit utility company, has worked tirelessly to develop and deliver education resources for school children in Rwanda.  This included developing resources for local children and helping train up future teachers in the area. Community Testing will run from Wednesday, 7th until Friday, 30th April, and  located in Treorchy (Park and Dare Theatre), Aberdare (Coliseum Theatre), Pontypridd (Llys Cadwyn Building B) and Mountain Ash (Darren Las Community Building), with the centres open 7 days a week between 9am and 7pm.
