Fundraising for Nightingale House Hospice will cross the Atlantic next weekend when a former Wrexham man is planning a 100km urban trek around the city of Toronto. Rob Newsome, 34, who has been living in Canada for the past ten years having before that lived in New Broughton, Wrexham for much of his life, is planning to do the trek over a 24 hour period. A new state-of the-art £6.9 million primary school in Gorseinon is ready to inspire a new generation of young people in September thanks to the dedication of two local businesses. The new development, on the corner of Parc-y-Werin, replaces the school’s original Victorian buildings and brings some 280 infants and juniors together on one site for the first time. The project has been jointly funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government through its 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme. The son of one of the 266 miners killed in a major disaster at the colliery where they both worked has celebrated his 100th birthday with a socially distanced party at the care home where he now lives. Albert Rowlands was a 14-year-old lamp boy at Gresford Colliery when his father was among those who perished in the explosion at the pit on Saturday, September 22, in 1934. Young people interested in becoming film makers are in for a treat during September thanks to Shakespeare Link who run the unique Willow Globe theatre in Mid Wales. Every Sunday during September, the company will host a free workshop for young people in the Stables at the Willow Globe, which is located at Llanwrthwl, near Rhayader. Time is running out for communities to apply for free garden packages as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s Local Places for Nature scheme. A choice of pre-paid ‘starter’ packages are being offered to community groups and organisations to create help reverse nature’s decline. They include all the plants, tools and materials needed to create small gardens. Detectives are appealing for information after a man suffered a stab wound at an address in Ely in the early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday, August 25). South Wales Police was called to a property on Plymouth Wood Close, shortly before 12.30am. A 36-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, where he currently remains in a critical condition.
