Gold medallist chef Nick Davies had a special reason to celebrate his 50th birthday, having been appointed the new manager of Culinary Team Wales. Davies, who lives in Llanidloes and works as a culinary craft trainer with Cambrian Training, steps up to manage the globe-trotting team of chefs, having previously been a team member and captain. The UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, the Lord’s Taverners, is delivering a free community cricket programme called ‘Wicketz’ in Cardiff for young people aged 8-12 which uses cricket as a vehicle for social change. A sixth-generation Welsh cattle farmer and entrepreneur, is driving forward plans for her ethically sourced hides and luxury leather goods businesses, after securing five-figure bank funding. A report will be considered by the local authority’s Cabinet Members when they meet next Thursday, January 24. The report recommends that the project is taken forward, after public engagement on the proposals was held towards the end of last year.  The indicative proposal is for a new school with the same capacity as the current Lawrenny Avenue site. It would be 10 form entry, accommodating up to 1,500 students between the age of 11 and 16, plus a sixth form. The owners of Guildford Crescent have agreed to postpone their plans for demolition following a meeting with Cardiff Council leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, to discuss a masterplan that the Council is developing for the area. Seven Cardiff schools have been awarded a grant of £12,500 to celebrate the career of Geraint Thomas and the key role that cycling club, the Maindy Flyers, played in his development. The grant has been awarded as part of the Arts Council of Wales’ “Creative Collaborations” scheme and the funds will be used to develop artwork that will eventually surround the famous track – a breeding ground of many cycling champions – which is situated on the grounds of the Better Cardiff operated Maindy Centre. Indoor climbing company The Climbing Hangar will open its first dedicated indoor bouldering facility in Swansea, creating 10 new jobs, after securing a new site in a deal brokered by joint property agents JLL and Lambert Smith Hampton.
