Statistics published today show the food and drink industry in Wales grew by 10% last year. Businesses in the sector had a total turnover of £24.6bn in 2023, compared to £22.3bn in 2022. The statistics are for the food and drink supply chain, which contains manufacturing and packaging, agriculture and fishing, retail and wholesale, and non-residential catering. The number of businesses increased by 1%, to 28,768 in 2023. The food and drink supply chain employed 228,500 people in Wales in 2023, equivalent to 17% of Wales’ total workforce. Vital services and community projects across Swansea are set to get more than £9 million in extra one off funding. Swansea Council’s Cabinet intends to invest £9.7 million including £6 million for social services which is under increasing pressure from rising demand and costs. A further seven projects could also receive the one-off funding to boost roads, travel and leisure facilities with further cabinet reports to follow. A number of small tourism businesses across Swansea have made the most of funding available to improve their offer. Thanks to UK Government Shared Prosperity Funding, Swansea Council has been able to help small-scale visitor accommodation businesses by enhancing the quality of their offerings. A man from Swansea has been jailed after being involved in the supply of Class A drugs. 26-year-old Jay Hume, from West Cross, was identified after his phone number was identified in communications with another individual arrested for drug offences in June. Examination of Hume’s mobile phone showed a large number of messages regarding payment for the cocaine that Hume was supplying. He has been sentenced to six years in prison at Swansea Crown Court for being concerned in the supply of cocaine. In recent months, the council’s Green Spaces team have been working with specialist contractors Sutcliffe Play Ltd and Play and Leisure Ltd on the repair and refurbishment of more than 20 children’s play areas across the county borough, with some playgrounds already open and more set to open next week. A final piece of restoration work is set to preserve a Prestatyn slice of history for future generations. Work has been carried out at the Prestatyn Roman Baths to help protect and restore the historical site at Melyd Avenue. The hidden gem was first discovered in the 1930’s during a round of excavations on the site. It was then covered, only to be excavated again in the 1980s, during the construction of the neighbouring housing estate. A new sculpture which symbolises Flat Holm and aims to link people on the mainland with the island as part of an arts project, has been installed on Cardiff Bay Barrage, just south of the Scott Memorial. The four-metre-tall hardwood sculpture of a radio is a significant milestone in the National Lottery Heritage Fund Project, “Flat Holm – A Walk Through Time,” and is part of a collection of new art content conceived and designed by artist Glenn Davidson.
