Blue Flags will be flown once again at five of Ceredigion’s most popular beaches in 2023.

These include Borth, Aberystwyth South, Llangrannog, Tresaith and Aberporth. An additional four beaches have achieved Seaside Award status and a further five have obtained the rural Green Coast Awards.

Beaches achieving Blue Flag and Green Coast award status must meet the highest “Excellent” water quality standard and are judged for the provision of facilities for beach users and for demonstrating good management and safety provision. The Seaside Award recognises beaches that have an overall “Good” standard of water quality, public facilities, safety provision and management.

Councillor Clive Davies, Ceredigion County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism welcomed the great news that such a large number of our beaches continue to be recognised with these quality benchmark awards. He said: “It’s fantastic to see Blue and Seaside Award flags flying at Ceredigion’s most popular bathing beaches again this year and we are fully expecting to see very busy beaches once again throughout this season. This has been achieved with the continued and much valued support of the numerous community voluntary groups and individuals championing the Caru Ceredigion message by undertaking regular clean-up and educational activities on our beaches and along the foreshore of Ceredigion. This has again, in no small way, contributed to our ability to put forward such a large number of our beaches and successfully obtain these prestigious awards, placing Ceredigion beaches amongst the very best in Wales and the UK.”

The following Ceredigion beaches have been awarded 2023 coastal awards:

Blue Flag Seaside Award Green Coast Award
    Borth Clarach Llanrhystud
Aberystwyth South Aberystwyth North Traeth Gwyn – New Quay
Llangrannog New Quay Harbour Cilborth – Llangrannog
    Tresaith New Quay Dolau/North Penbryn
    Aberporth   Mwnt

Ceredigion County Council continues to work with Natural Resources Wales, Welsh Water and other stakeholders to maintain the best possible bathing water quality to enable the public to continue to bath/swim with confidence on our designated bathing beaches.

The coastal award schemes in Wales are co-ordinated and administered by Keep Wales Tidy.
