Bridgend Taxi Marshals help to create safer streets this December

Taxi Marshals will be on duty in Bridgend town centre this December, in a bid to ensure a safe journey home for revellers.

Liaising closely with South Wales Police, the aim of the service is to provide an oversight – observing for any potentially disruptive situations, as well as supporting those leaving Bridgend’s night spots over the Christmas period.

Working on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout December, between 11pm and 5am, two Taxi Marshals will be operating at the taxi rank on Market Street and a further two will be placed at the rank on Derwen Road.

Taxi Marshals will also be on duty at other special events where crowds are anticipated, to oversee the taxi rank queues, to quell any flashpoints, as well as to ensure they remain orderly.

This is an important initiative in preventing and reducing alcohol-related problems which often lead to crime and disorder.

Chaos in a taxi queue can result in anything from physical assault to a road traffic accident, if not controlled.

    Local Policing Inspector, Gareth Newman

The service is funded by the ‘Safer Streets’ initiative, launched in Bridgend County Borough, to address women’s safety, neighbourhood crime, as well as anti-social behaviour.

Working alongside South Wales Police, safeguarding the public is a priority. I am certain that the introduction of Taxi Marshals will prove to be an invaluable resource, helping us to ensure the safety of those active in Bridgend town centre during the later hours.

This visible stewardship offered by the Taxi Marshals, will provide reassurance to taxi drivers and the public by potentially dampening any criminal conduct or anti-social behaviour. The role of these officers will involve tact, care and judgment – a role which I am sure will be valued by many over the coming weeks.

Councillor Neelo Farr, Cabinet Member for Regeneration
