Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet has unanimously approved a range of proposals to address the issue of private empty homes.
During a meeting held on 8th March Cabinet members approved the ‘Private Sector Empty Homes Strategy 2023 – 28’ which sets out the Council’s plans to tackle the high number of private empty homes in the county borough. It also sets out a range of initiatives available to the Council to help owners bring their empty homes back into use.
As well as offering support and assistance through a range of grants and loans, the Council’s dedicated Empty Homes Team will assist with progressing enforcement action should owners of long term empty homes fail to engage.
Cllr Shayne Cook, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said “Empty homes are not only a visible blight in our communities and a target for anti-social behaviour, but also a wasted resource during a time when the need for housing is increasing.
“The Council has demonstrated its commitment to preventing and addressing this issue by employing a dedicated team of staff who are actively engaging with owners of empty homes in the county borough, offering them support and financial assistance.
“However, where the informal approach has been exhausted then there will be a need to move to a more formal approach via enforcement action.”
