Students from Cardiff and Vale College have won first, second and third prizes in the Cowbridge Art Group Annual Student Awards.

The winner was Miri Hughes from Cardiff, who was awarded the prize certificate and £75, for producing a bilingual book design exploring the Welsh folk tale Blodeuwedd from the Mabinogion. This involved both digital and drawn illustration work in a final printed book, and posters of the pages were displayed in the exhibition.

Miri has successfully completed her Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at CAVC and has progressed on to BA (Hons) in Illustration at Swansea, Trinity St David’s University Art School.

Second prize of £50 went to fellow Foundation Diploma in Art and Design student Nikolett Kovacs from Barry for her powerful stain painted images exploring emotional and mental states. Having successfully completed her course, Nikolett has progressed on to study for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Cardiff Met.

Ada Pumput, also from Barry, won the £25 third prize, having worked hard to produce strong, large scale ceramic vessels exploring and developing her personal concerns. Ada studied for a Foundation Degree in Ceramics at CAVC and is taking her third and final year at Cardiff Met to top up to a full BA (Hons) degree in Ceramics.

The prizes were awarded after College’s exhibition, ‘Milestone’, was held at the Old Hall Gallery in Cowbridge.

CAVC Art and Design Lecturer Adrian Metcalfe said:

“The judging panel stressed the difficulty in making the decision due to the high quality of all of the work on display. They felt all the students were worthy of commendation and that the show demonstrated the high level of ability across Cardiff and Vale College Art and Design courses.

“Particularly impressive was the professionalism of the learners in presenting their work and the range of subjects they examined. The judges said the exhibition represented the quality of the courses offered at Cardiff and Vale College and the strength of the teaching team.”
