Cardiff Bus is alerting passengers to diversions throughout Whitchurch this weekend as thousands of runners take part in the fourth annual Cardiff 5k.

The operator is notifying customers, and those heading to the event, of bus stop changes as participants prepare to flood the streets once again for the charitable run on May 5th.

The Cardiff 5k will take place on streets throughout Whitchurch from 7pm, with runners starting and finishing on Merthyr Road.

During the event a number of roads across the village will be closed to traffic from 3pm until midnight with diversions also in place across Whitchurch.

Cardiff Bus customers are advised that from 3pm to the last bus, there will be a road closure in place on Merthyr Road, from Bishops Road to Old Church Road.

This will affect services 21/23/24and 25 which will divert in both directions between Penlline Road and Gabalfa Interchange along Manor Way/Northern Avenue, Ty’n-Y-Parc Road and Old Church Road in place of the stops at Merthyr Road shops.

Customers are advised to use bus stops along the diversionary route, including the temporary stop on Old Church Road.

Then from 6.30pm to 8.30pm there will be additional road closures in place, at Merthyr Road, from the junction with College Road, Penlline Road, College Road, and Gabalfa Avenue.

As a result, services 21 and 23 will divert in both directions between Pantmawr Road and Gabalfa Interchange along Manor Way and Northern Avenue.  Customers are advised to use the bus stops along the diversionary route.

Finally, service 35 will also divert from 6.30pm to 8.30pm between Gabalfa Interchange to Cathedral View via Western Avenue, Excelsior Road, Western Avenue, Aberporth Road, Western Drive, Gabalfa Avenue.  This means that the bus stops at Celtic Road, The Philog, Whitchurch Common, College Road and the western end of Gabalfa Avenue will not be served.

Commercial Manager Gareth Stevens wished all those taking part good luck and reminded customers to check any route changes before they travel.

He said: “The Cardiff 5k has proved to be a fantastically successful event for numerous good causes over the past four years, so we would like to wish everyone taking part good luck once again this year.

“We would like to remind all our customers travelling to and from Whitchurch on May 5th to check all service diversions and road closures before starting their journey, to enable them to avoid any unnecessary disruptions during the day.

“All information on road closure and service updates can be found on our website www.cardiffbus.com or at our travel centre on Westgate Street. For all the latest up-to-date travel news please visit @Cardiffbus on Facebook or Twitter.”
