Cardiff Met’s Summer Show returns this year to showcase the art and design projects of undergraduate students in their final year. The exhibition will include the work of ceramics, graphic communication, product design, fine art, illustration, architectural design technology, maker and textiles students.

The Summer Show will be held between the 26th May and 1st June at Cardiff Met’s Llandaff Campus, with a private showing on the 25th May. The Summer Show will be opened by Award-winning, Welsh designer, Bethan Gray, who has enjoyed a successful 20-year career within the design industry and was awarded Elle Decoration’s ‘Best British Designer’ in 2013/14.

Third year students of Cardiff School of Art & Design have been working hard to prepare for the show, which will mark the culmination of their time at the University. There will be an exciting array of diverse work displayed at the show at Cardiff Met’s Llandaff Campus, covering a wide range of disciplines, from Illustration to Architectural Design.

One of the talented students exhibiting at the Summer Show will be Francesca Dilella, who is studying BA (hons) Textiles. Francesca is a prime example of what students can achieve if they have a goal and passion to succeed.

Francesca deferred a year after the birth of her daughter and began her course in September 2015. While balancing her education, the demands of parenting and part-time work, Francesca was able to complete her degree with several academic successes, including being awarded ‘Best Creative Application of Combined Hand Drawn and Digital Design’ and securing a six-week internship with Design Group UK.

Another exciting project on display will be from ceramics student, Frances Lukins, who moved to Cardiff from California and set up a coffee shop influenced by Japanese design. Her final project work explores the transitional gardens of the Japanese tea ceremony, and how material compositions can progressively transition the public from the business of life to a mindful, sensorially heightened state of mind in order to better enjoy their coffee. Her dissertation tests out this approach, including a film of her staff being trained to choreograph their movement as part of a wider enactment of this approach.

Fine art student, Sophia Warner, will also be exhibiting at the Summer Show and will be displaying three etchings that highlight environmental issues. In addition to this, Sophia has produced a book for children going to foster care which is inspired by her and her brother’s experience going into care.

Speaking about the book, Sophia said:

“The book is linked to my dissertation and the reason I wanted to produce it is because it is something I wish I had when I was going into care. It explains the process of foster care and I hope that it will help them understand it and not be afraid of what is going on.”

Sophia hopes to produce further books to support the foster care process, such as for foster parents or children leaving foster care.

Every year the Summer Show encapsulates the spirit of CSAD and demonstrates key elements of the school’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) curriculum; which focusses on preparing CSAD students for a changing world while also maintaining a wider, global perspective. This is underpinned by innovative teaching methods which encourages students to form and express opinions.

Visitors are welcome to pop in throughout the week to see what the students have created and for those who want to keep up-to-date with all that goes on, individuals can follow the official twitter, @CSADNews or follow #CSAD18 for live tweets from the school and students.
