Cardiff Met Fantasy and Folklore Academic Talks Tolkien at Oxford University event

A CARDIFF MET academic will speak today at a prestigious Oxford University event centred around fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien.

The once-in-a-generation exhibition at Oxford University’s Bodleian Library runs until the end of October and Dr Dimitra Fimi, a Senior Lecturer in English and Programme Director for Humanities courses at Cardiff Met will contribute to tomorrow’s official opening event this evening.

The Tolkien expert, who has previously been shortlisted for the national Katharine Briggs Folklore Award, for her monograph Celtic Myth in Contemporary Children’s Fantasy: Idealization, Identity, Ideologyand has featured on the judging panel for a prestigious literary prize; will address the many Tolkien fans and scholars who have been anticipating the exhibition which includes manuscripts and Tolkien’s own drawings, including many which have never been published or seen by researchers before.

The exhibition has featured extensively in national media including BBC News, ITV News, The Guardianand The Times and it will be accompanied by a series of public engagement events at the Bodleian.

Tomorrow’s Mythopoeia: myth-creation and Middle-earthis a free, ticketed event featuring Dr Fimi alongside Professor Dame Marina Warner (Professor of English and Creative Writing, Birkbeck, University of London; also President of the Royal Society of Literature), and Professor Verlyn Flieger (Professor Emerita, University of Maryland). The moderator will be Professor Carolyne Larrington (Professor of Medieval European Literature, St John’s College, Oxford).
