Cardiff Met Sport has started the New Year with a bang having secured appearances on national TV for three consecutive days. Cardiff Met Archers Women’s Basketball Club will appear on BBC Sport online live tonight (Friday January 5), with TV crews making their way to Cyncoed Campus on Saturday January 5 and Sunday January 6 to cover Cardiff Met FC and Cardiff Met RFC in action.

The Archers are playing Sevenoaks Suns away in Surrey in the Women’s British Basketball League and the match will be available on the BBC Sports red button today from 7:30pm.

The national broadcaster of Wales, S4C, will be filming on the first weekend of the New Year to screen the high flying Cardiff Met FC vs Aberystwyth in the Welsh Premier League followed by Cardiff Met RFC who will be hosting Llanelli in a Welsh Cup match. Llanelli are now the most successful Cup side in Welsh rugby history having won the competition several times in the past. Sgorio will also stream highlights of the football match in its new Wednesday show.

Currently fourth in the league, in the final of the Nathaniel Cup next month – which will also be televised – and still in the Welsh Cup, Cardiff Met’s football team are chasing an historic triple crown and the chance of a place in Europe.

The backing of the BBC and S4C, supporting teams in action in three different sports, helps support Cardiff Met Sport’s position as a leading sporting centre in Wales.

Senior Lecturer in Sport Coaching & Physical Education and Director of Rugby at Cardiff Met RFC, Danny Milton, said: “From a rugby point of view to be able to host one of the most famous clubs in Welsh history who have beaten the All Blacks and won the Cup on so many occasions is particularly exciting. To be part of a sporting environment where we can have three separate sports teams televised on Welsh sports TV channels on consecutive days is pretty amazing. The players and staff are working hard to build an inclusive environment where student athletes can achieve academically, while still developing as rugby players. Playing Llanelli in the cup will be a real measure of where our programme stands in comparison to the top end of Welsh Rugby.’

Director of Cardiff Met Men’s Football and Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching, Dr Christian Edwards, said: “This weekend will yet again showcase that Cardiff Met Men’s FC has the premier university football programme in the UK. Our status as British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) champions and our ongoing success in the Welsh Premier league, where we have already gained a place in the Nathaniel MG Cup final, proves we are pushing the boundaries for the ‘dual career athlete’ and demonstrates Cardiff Metropolitan University as an elite sporting organisation.”

Head of Sport at S4C and Cardiff Met Cyncoed alumni, Sue Butler, said: “S4C is delighted to have a double-bill of action this weekend. The students are our future and they approach their sport with a fearless sense of adventure. There is an echo of the past, too – it takes me back to my days at the University, when the rugby XV took on the then-mighty Pontypool in the Cup. Happy days, although we lost. S4C will definitely be the place to be this weekend.”
