Cardiff residents asked to help shape city’s walking and cycling future

Cardiff Council is asking residents, businesses and community groups to help shape the future of walking, wheeling and cycling across the city as a public consultation launches on a new 15 year transport plan.

The consultation, which opened today and runs until August 3, focuses on the updated Active Travel Network Map, which outlines both existing routes and future proposals aimed at making it easier for people to travel around Cardiffwithout relying on private cars.

The new map will replace the previous version approved by Welsh Ministers in December 2021 and will help guide future investment in walking and cycling infrastructure across the city.

The council says routes included in the map will later be prioritised using a range of factors, including council transport priorities, opportunities to reduce car use, access to schools, transport hubs, retail and leisure destinations, as well as deprivation, health impacts, safety and collision data.

Cllr Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Climate Change, said: “We hope that residents and interested parties across the city give their views on our new Active Travel Map, which outlines proposals to improve cycling and walking routes across the city over the next 15 years.

“The Council is committed to building an integrated network for both cyclists and pedestrians, so that walking and cycling become attractive options for those who can use them. The Active Travel Network Map supports our wider aims to create sustainable travel options across the city, improve health and wellbeing, reduce congestion, cut air pollution further and make it easier for people to travel around Cardiff without relying on their private car.”

The draft map has been updated to include new walking and cycling routes completed since 2021 which meet Welsh Government standards. It also refreshes future route proposals, removing sections that have already been delivered and aligning plans with current council policies and development plans.

The council said the updated map also places greater focus on improving and connecting existing routes, following new Welsh Government guidance.

Routes shown on the map include existing walking and cycling routes that have already been assessed for safety and quality, alongside future schemes planned over the next five to 15 years.

Under the Active Travel (Wales) Act, councils across Wales must regularly review their Active Travel Maps and demonstrate how they are improving routes for walkers, cyclists and people using wheelchairs or mobility aids.

Following the consultation, a report will be produced responding to the feedback received before any amendments are made ahead of submission to the Welsh Government on December 1, 2026.

Residents can view the proposed map and take part in the consultation via Cardiff Active Travel Consultation.
