Caerphilly-based recycling and energy-from-waste business, Bryn Group has made an application to vary its operating hours, so it can meet the Council waste department’s requirements and better serve the needs of local residents.
The family-run company holds a number of contracts with local authorities to process household and commercial food and green compostable waste at its recycling and anaerobic digestion centre near Gelligaer.
The current planning permission limits the hours of operation at weekends and public holidays.
Bryn Group manager, Jennifer Price, explained:
“The local authority needs to be able to empty its collection lorries whenever they are operating and that means, for health and safety reasons, we need to be open to allow them to do that. The Council works hard to reduce the impact of public holidays and bad weather on collections but that means we need to be more flexible to help the local authority meet the needs of local people.
“This application will not increase the volume of waste collected or the number of lorries that visit the site. We have a 20-year contract with the Council to manage food waste, so we need to be open when the council’s waste collect vehicles are full, and that means more flexible operating hours are needed.
“This new application to vary conditions relating to operating hours will ensure all residents can have their food waste and compostable green waste collected as soon as possible when normal collection services are altered. This will help the local authority better cope with changes to schedules caused by bank holidays and cancelled collections.”
Approved operating hours for local authority vehicles at the site are 07.30 hours to 18.00 hours Monday to Friday and 07.30 hours to 13.00 hours on Saturdays and bank holidays. The planning application seeks to extend access to local authority vehicles by an earlier 30 minutes on Monday to Saturday, until 16.00 hours on a Saturday, and from 07.00 hours to 16.00 hours on a Sunday and Bank/Public Holidays.

The application seeks to vary Condition 8 of Planning Permission 18/0085/NCC (as amended by appeal decision APP/K6920/A/18/3203497 Bryn Power Ltd) and has been submitted to Caerphilly County Borough Council with the reference number 18/0843/NCC.
