Construction of improved athletics facilities in Clydach Vale is now complete.
The King George V athletics track has benefitted from £800,000 #RCTinvest funding, which has delivered a series of upgrades – including a new and improved athletics track surface, enhancements to field event areas, drainage improvements to the existing football pitch and the introduction of floodlights.
The facility has been closed to the public since last summer to ensure works were completed safely. The final weeks of the scheme were undertaken with contractor South Wales Sports Grounds adhering to social distancing, due to the Coronavirus emergency. All work has now been completed, and the facility was handed over to the Council on Friday, May 15.
Due to the Coronavirus emergency, the facility will remain closed at this time. This positon will be regularly considered in line with any changes to national public health guidance – which is currently being reviewed every three weeks.
Councillor Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said: “I’m delighted these improvements have been made to the King George V athletics track, which will be a huge asset to local athletics and the wider community. It adds to the Council’s significant recent investment in state-of-the-art athletics tracks for Aberdare and Beddau – ensuring the Rhondda, Cynon Valley and Taff areas all have outdoor athletics facilities that we can be proud of.
“Unfortunately, Coronavirus has meant arrangements to re-open the Clydach Vale facility have been affected. Given the current situation with COVID-19 in Rhondda Cynon Taf, the Council has taken the decision to keep the facility closed, and to reconsider this position in line with Welsh Government’s regular review of public health restrictions, currently taking place every three weeks.”
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is currently reviewing when the improved track and facilities can reopen due to coronavirus.
