A Flintshire community food group will be handing out plenty of Christmas cheer to its customers thanks to the generosity of a new business to the town.

Buckley Community Fridge has just received a consignment of 100 chocolate selection packs from Denbigh-based Lock Stock Self-Storage which recently opened a new storage park on the town’s Globe Way.

It’s a welcome seasonal bonus for the Community Fridge, based at The Old Library and open three times a week, which is seeing a surge in numbers at its doors as winter and the cost of living crisis bite.

Chair Viv Blondek said: “We’re very grateful to Lock Stock and this will go down very well. It’s a nice treat and what’s Christmas without them. Kids love selection boxes and we’re always grateful for the support we get.

“It’s a very difficult time for people and we’re seeing more and more that people want meals they can heat up quickly because it costs so much to use the cooker, especially for those on their own.

“We get tremendous support from the local supermarkets and Buckley Round Table donated a new fridge for us and we like to think that if it’s on your shopping list for the week then we will have it.

“We always make sure we have fresh food and vegetables because even if you’re short of money you still need nutritious food.”

The Buckley Fridge opened its doors at the town’s Old Library and Swimming Baths, on Mold Road, for the first time just over a year ago and now hands out food, drinks and much-needed sanitaryware, soap, toothpaste and cleaning products.

They are open on Mondays from 3.30pm to 5pm, Thursdays, 9.30am to 11pm, and Saturdays, 11am to 1pm, and Viv added: “We’ve got fantastic team of volunteers here and they do a great and much-needed job.

“We welcome any donations of non-perishable and everyday items that are un-opened and in date.”

Lisa James, of Lock Stock Self Storage, said: “The team of volunteers here do a fantastic job at what is a very difficult time for so many people.

“It’s clearly a much-needed service and hopefully the chocolate selection boxes will bring some Christmas cheer to local households.

“We just opened a new storage park in Buckley and we like to support the community in the places where we are in business whether that’s charities like the Buckley Fridge or local schools and community groups.”
