The UK government is making £20 million of regeneration funding available for Newport’s Pride in Place neighbourhood which is focussed on the city centre core and parts of Maindee and Pill.
It has emphasised that communities themselves have to be at the heart of the process and the board will reflect that priority.
Ms Begum will now be involved in the interviews for local board members who will then have the task of developing a strategy for investing the funding and submitting an investment plan for approval to the government before the end of the year.
“I’ve lived in Newport for 20 years, developing a deep personal and professional connection to the city and its communities,” she said.
“Newport has given me countless opportunities, both personally and professionally, and in return I have dedicated much of my career and voluntary work to supporting the city, its people and its future development.
“I feel honoured to be chosen to contribute to the Pride in Place initiative and I will be committed to ensuring that inclusion, collaboration, fairness and community voice remain at the heart of the board’s work.
“I will strive to create a leadership environment where people feel valued, represented and empowered to contribute meaningfully.”
Ms Begum, who worked in the NHS and other public services, is also a magistrate, board member for the Bevan Foundation and holds advisory and governance roles across Wales.

Councillor James Clarke, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “Rusna has a wealth of experience working and engaging with communities as well as decision makers that make her the ideal choice for this role.
“I know she will be a passionate and tireless advocate to ensure the fund is used for the benefit of residents living in those communities which are part of the Pride in Place neighbourhood.”
