Courses win accreditation from Royal Geographical Society

Two Swansea University courses are among the first postgraduate qualifications to be awarded accreditation by the Royal Geographical Society.

The Society has given its backing to the MSc Environmental Dynamics and Climate Change and MSc Geographic Information and Climate Change.

It launched an undergraduate programme accreditation scheme in 2016, however, this is the first time the Society has accepted applications from master’s degree programmes.

It is a move that aims to recognise good practice in geographical learning and teaching across UK higher education, while supporting continuous quality improvement and promoting good student outcomes across the sector.

Dr Iain Robertson, of the University’s geography department, said: “We are so pleased to be one of the first postgraduate programmes to be accredited by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).

“Accreditation by this highly respected professional body ensures that our courses are at the forefront of a rapidly changing field and remain relevant to society at large.”

Applicants to the two courses will have the opportunity to benefit from interdisciplinary research expertise of staff around geographic information, environmental and climate dynamics, marine and ecosystem biology, and sustainable development.

Successful graduates have enjoyed employment opportunities in a variety of organisations and progressed to a take up a range of stimulating roles.

Rhys Jones, now a graduate land specialist (GLS) with civil engineering firm Jacobs, said: “I’d like to thank everyone in the department for running a course that has enabled me to get a job I love. It wouldn’t have been possible without my master’s degree.”
