The roads through Ceredigion’s towns will re-open next week ahead of the new school term.
From 05 September 2021, the daily road closures in Aberaeron, Aberystwyth, Cardigan and New Quay will come to an end, as will the 24 hour closure on Market Street, Aberystwyth as we anticipate that visitor numbers in our towns will reduce as the summer draws to an end.
However, other elements of the Safe Zones will remain in place for the time being, including the alternative traffic flow arrangements and wider footpaths, which enable people to maintain a reasonable social distance whilst exploring the towns. It will also enable the Council to respond swiftly should further lockdown measures be required.
The coronavirus remains a threat in our communities and infection rates are rising dramatically in every part of the county. Therefore, the Safe Zones continue to be a vital measure to allow people to roam the streets freely and safely without feeling exposed to the virus in any way.
Background and Consultation
The Safe Zones were originally implemented in July 2020 as part of the Council’s response to the global pandemic and its efforts to keep residents and visitors safe during the busy tourist periods.
The views and feedback of Ceredigion residents and visitors were sought during and following their operation in 2020. As a result, adjustments were introduced to their implementation ahead of the tourist season in 2021.
Ceredigion County Council will continue to liaise with businesses that have embraced the road closures by creating safe outdoor eating areas for people to enjoy. We will also discuss options with businesses to support the vitality of our towns’ economy going forward.
A further public consultation will be held on the Safe Zones in the coming months to assess their impact and gather ideas on the best way forward for our towns.
