Decommissioning work continues at Plascrug

Plascrug Leisure Centre, Aberystwyth

With Plascrug Leisure Centre now returned to Ceredigion County Council’s responsibility, there is much to look forward to with the decommissioning work in full flow.

Every part of the building was used when it was a Field Hospital. Hospital wards were created in the squash courts and the main hall, which involved the installation of new plumbing, electrical and ventilation systems, in addition to building temporary walls and installing hygienic surfaces. Changing rooms in the leisure centre and swimming pool were adapted for medical staff use and the centre’s sports equipment were removed to accommodate these temporary structures. In addition to the decommissioning works, maintenance checks and works are also taking place as it was not possible to do so whilst Plascrug Leisure Centre was used a Field Hospital.

It has become apparent that the amount of work to be done to the building is more than initially anticipated. All the work must be undertaken, prior to opening, to ensure that it meets all health and safety requirements and the standards expected by the county’s residents.

The Council’s main priority is to reopen Plascrug Leisure Centre with high quality and safe services for everyone to enjoy, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work towards that.

Preparations are underway to reopen Aberaeron Leisure Centre, Lampeter Leisure Centre and Penglais School Sports Hall (for community club use only) from the week commencing 07 June 2021, onwards. The opening of Lampeter Swimming Pool will be delayed to enable essential works to be carried out that were identified in recent maintenance checks. Cardigan Leisure Centre remains to be used as a mass vaccination centre by Hywel Dda University Health Board in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
