Nearly 600 vehicles were monitored in Cardiff as part of a joint road safety operation aimed at tackling speeding, seatbelt offences and other dangerous driving behaviours.
South Wales Police officers joined forces with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and GoSafe Cymru on Wednesday, June 10, to carry out the enforcement and education initiative on Tyn-y-Parc Road in Rhiwbina.
During the operation, a total of 594 vehicles were monitored, with 38 motorists stopped and educated for speeding offences. A further three drivers were spoken to for failing to wear a seatbelt.
The initiative focused on raising awareness of the dangers associated with some of the most common causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions.
Drivers stopped during the operation were given the option of immediately attending an educational session delivered by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service or accepting a fixed penalty notice.
South Wales Police said engagement and education remain key tools in improving road safety and encouraging motorists to make safer choices behind the wheel.
Speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt are two of the so-called “Fatal Five” factors that contribute to the majority of serious road traffic collisions and fatalities on UK roads.
The remaining Fatal Five offences are:
• Careless driving
• Drink and drug driving
• Using a mobile phone while driving
The force regularly works alongside partner agencies to tackle these offences and improve safety for all road users across South Wales.
Motorists are being reminded to drive within speed limits, always wear a seatbelt and avoid distractions while driving to help reduce the risk of collisions and save lives.
