Traffic is already building on parts of the M4 across South Wales as thousands of people prepare to head off for the May half term break, with warm weather expected to add to the busy conditions.

According to Traffic Wales, congestion has been reported on the M4 eastbound at Junction 26 Malpas in Newport, while delays are also affecting the westbound carriageway near Junction 23A Magor.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys as roads become busier throughout the day.

The congestion comes as schools across Wales break up for the first day of the May half term holiday, with many families expected to travel for short breaks, day trips and visits to popular coastal and tourist destinations.

Adding to the traffic pressures, the warm spell forecast by the Met Office is likely to encourage more people onto the roads this weekend.

Temperatures across parts of Wales are expected to climb well above average for May, with sunny conditions forecast in many areas.

Motorists travelling on the M4 are being advised to check traffic updates before setting off and prepare for longer journey times during peak travel periods.
