Drone operators in Cardiff are being warned of temporary airspace restrictions coming into force on Thursday (15 October) as the city prepares for the ceremonial opening of the Seventh Senedd.
South Wales Police has confirmed that a temporary restricted airspace zone will be introduced around the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, with anyone flying a drone within the designated area potentially facing arrest and prosecution.
The restriction, officially known as a Restricted Area Temporary (RAT), will be in place between 8am and 5pm on Thursday, 15 October 2026.
It will cover a 1.5 nautical mile radius around the Senedd, equivalent to approximately 2.8 kilometres, affecting a significant area of Cardiff Bay and surrounding parts of the city.
The restrictions apply to all unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including drones of any size or weight.
Police have warned that anyone found operating a drone within the restricted area could have their equipment seized and face potential arrest and prosecution.
The temporary measures are being introduced to support the ceremonial opening of the Seventh Senedd, which will take place in Cardiff Bay on Thursday.
South Wales Police is urging drone owners and operators to familiarise themselves with the restrictions before taking to the skies.
Anyone planning to fly a drone in Cardiff on Thursday is advised to check the latest airspace information and ensure they remain outside the restricted zone during the specified hours.
The restrictions will remain in place until 5pm, after which normal airspace rules will apply, subject to any other existing restrictions.
