The new swimming pool at Pentwyn Leisure Centre will re-open on Monday July 27th, marking a major milestone in the centre’s redevelopment.

The 25-metre swimming pool features adaptable moving floors, that allow water depths to be changed to improve accessibility and support a wide range of swimming activities. Alongside the pool, visitors can also enjoy a brand-new slide and a fun, family-focused aquatic play area.

Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Jennifer Burke, said: “Reopening the swimming pool at Pentwyn Leisure Centre fulfils a longstanding commitment to the community and reflects a significant investment in local facilities at a time when many local authorities across the UK have had to make difficult decisions about leisure provision.

“We recognise that residents have had to wait for this facility to return, and we appreciate their patience while the work has been completed.

“This is not the end of our investment in Pentwyn Leisure Centre. Alongside our partners GLL, we’re also delivering a range of other upgrades and improvements that will result in a modern, inclusive and sustainable leisure facility that benefits the community for many years to come.”

The reopening of the pool, which has been pushed back by one week due to the unforeseen need for an extended sign off period due to minor certification and insurance issues relating to the integration of new and existing building systems, forms part of a wider programme of ongoing Cardiff Council investment which is transforming the centre.

New village-style changing facilities, with single-sex provision, family spaces and accessible cubicles have been provided. The main reception area is also being redesigned and upgraded to deliver a more welcoming, accessible and efficient arrival experience.

Not-for-profit social enterprise GLL, who operate Pentwyn Leisure Centre, is also making significant investment in the health and fitness provision.

A new gym space is being created in the main activities hall. The new space will be able to accommodate a larger range of equipment and enable the creation of dedicated workout zones, providing members with a more spacious and versatile fitness environment, that supports a wide variety of training styles and fitness goals.

The current gym space will then be converted into a dedicated fitness class studio, allowing for an expanded timetable of group exercise classes, including Zumba, Yoga and Pilates.

These improvements sit alongside energy-efficiency upgrades to the centre and the installation of rooftop solar panels and battery storage which are helping to reduce operating costs and improve the centre’s environmental performance in line with the Council’s One Planet Cardiff commitments.
