Green Man Rising competition announces the shortlisted acts who will compete to perform on the festival’s iconic Mountain Stage this August.

The shortlist for Green Man Festival’s emerging talent competition, Green Man Rising, has been announced. Welsh language singer Mari Mathias is among the top five who have been selected. She is joined by TTSSFU, ladylike, Nature Kids and The Orchestra (For Now).

The finalists will head to Cardiff on 13th June to perform at the city’s famous Clwb Ifor Bach, where a winner will be crowned. The winner will then open the Mountain Stage at Green Man 2024 in August, with the runners-up taking a spot on the Rising stage along with a video session filmed at the festival.

The Green Man Rising competition, now in its 15th year, is open to all UK bands to compete for the opportunity to open the festival and perform on its iconic Mountain Stage. The 2024 competition attracted a record number of applicants once again, with more than 3,500 applying for a chance to perform at Green Man 2024, and a long list of 25 selected from there.

The task of choosing the top five was decided by top music industry experts including Adam Walton from BBC Wales, So Young, The Quietus, Vocal Girls, Buzz, Yuck, The Forty Five, Hard of Hearing and Secretly Canadian.

Green Man’s Fiona Stewart commented on the shortlist: “We all think it’s brilliant that Green Man Rising has supported so many early career artists, and we see the standard of entrants increase every year.”

“Listening to thousands of applicants, and then shortlisting to five is no easy task, and I want to thank the music loving team who selected our finalists. I think this year’s choice of finalists reflects the strength of emerging talent right now. We are lucky to have so many acts who want to be a part of Green Man and with another record-breaking number of entrants this year we want to continue to champion emerging talent.”

Fiona added: “We’re very excited to be welcoming these five acts to the Welsh capital in just over a month where a winner will be crowned. All of the finalists will get a chance to play at the festival to our discerning Green Man audience – but for the winner, this will be their chance to open Green Man 2024 on the iconic Mountain Stage and be on the same bill as Sampha, Big Thief and Jon Hopkins too.”
