Four jailed for robbing driver delivering sofas

Four people have been jailed for a combined total of 26 years after assaulting and robbing a man

On 10 May 2022, a man was delivering sofas in the Rhydfelin area when a woman approached the van asking the driver if he needed directions. The woman opened the passengers door, climbed in and tried to take the satchel attached to the seat.

The driver’s door then opened and a group of men, one holding a hammer, one holding a screwdriver, and another holding a zombie knife, threatened and assaulted the delivery driver.

They demanded he handed over money and took items from the van.

The driver was struck several times to the thigh and received a puncture wound to the hand.

Four people were sentenced yesterday (Tuesday 17 January) at Cardiff Crown Court for multiple offences:

  • Dorian Brown, aged 36, from Tonypandy, pleaded guilty to possession of a knife, robbery and assault and was sentenced to seven years and one month.
  • Sarah Evans, aged 46, from Rhydyfelin, pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to four years and nine months.
  • Jason Hall, aged 50, from Rhydyfelin, pleaded guilty to robbery and assault and was sentenced to seven years and six months.
  • Matthew Maher, aged 46, from Rhydyfelin, pleaded guilty to robbery and assault and was sentenced to six years and nine months.

Detective Constable Jack Harris said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on a delivery driver who was just doing his job.

“Thanks to the CCTV and forensic enquiries made by detectives, we were able to put together a strong case.

“They all deserve to be behind bars and I’m glad we’ve been able to deliver justice for the victim.”
